Giving Birth Without a Partner — How to Prepare With Confidence

Preparing for birth without a partner takes courage. It also takes a different kind of preparation. One that puts you, your body and your nervous system at the centre.

Whether you are a single mother by choice, your partner is abroad, or your situation simply doesn’t fit the standard picture, you deserve support that is completely tailored to you. And the good news is: You can absolutely do this.

Within the Natural Waves model, pregnancy and birth belong to the Summer Wave: a time of growth, trust and finding your own inner strength. That is exactly what birth preparation as a solo mum is about.

Who can be your birth partner?

Your birth partner does not have to be a romantic partner. It can be a close friend, a sister, an aunt, a neighbour, or a doula or birth coach. The most important thing is that you feel safe and comfortable with this person, so that together you can create the calm and peace that your body needs to birth well.

You can also choose to give birth without any additional support person. In that case, your midwife becomes your primary support and can take on many of the tasks a birth partner would normally fulfil.

Everything is allowed. Nothing is required.

My own experience of pregnancy, living on my own

I know this situation from the inside. When I was preparing for my own birth, my partner back then was waiting for his visa abroad and could only travel to the Netherlands two weeks before my due date. We made the best of it: video calls, exercises that didn’t require physical contact, and plenty of trust in the process. I also asked a close friend to be present.

In the end, he made it in time. And I look back on that birth with warmth, despite, or perhaps because of, the unconventional preparation.

It taught me that what matters most is not who is in the room, but how well you have prepared your body, your mind and your nervous system.

What integrative body-mind support looks like at Natural Waves

Preparing well as a solo mum-to-be means building your own inner foundation — a felt sense of safety, trust and readiness that you carry into the birth room with you, regardless of who else is there.

This is what 1:1 care at Natural Waves is built around. Not a fixed protocol, but a personal process that meets you where you are — physically, emotionally and energetically. We work with what your body and nervous system need at each stage of your pregnancy, always in close attunement with you.

For single mums-to-be in particular, this kind of continuity matters. You are not starting from scratch at every appointment. You have someone who knows your story, your body and your history — and who can hold that thread from early preparation all the way through to birth and beyond.

Whether that means releasing fear, building trust in your body, processing earlier experiences, or simply feeling held during a time that can feel lonely, that is exactly what this support is for.

The Integrated Birth Path — a doula-like experience

If you are looking for more than occasional sessions, the Integrated Birth Path offers a fully guided journey through your pregnancy and towards birth. It combines ongoing personal support with integrative body-mind sessions — creating a doula-like experience that evolves with you throughout the entire process.

For women birthing without a partner, this level of continuity can be particularly valuable. You arrive at your birth feeling genuinely prepared, not just intellectually, but in your body and in your nervous system.

On pricing: I understand that preparing for birth as a single parent can feel financially different, too. If the investment feels like a threshold, I am happy to look at the options together. We can explore what is possible during a free intro call — no pressure, no obligation.

Your options range from 1:1 care to full support

Not everyone needs the same level of support, and that is completely fine. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy and what you are looking for, there are different ways to work together:

If you are new to birth preparation and want to start gently, the free Hypnobirthing masterclass is a good first step — no commitment needed. If you are looking for flexible, self-paced preparation, the online Hypnobirthing Pro course lets you work entirely in your own time. If you want personal, hands-on support in the final weeks of your pregnancy, individual 1:1 care in Utrecht offers integrative body-mind care tailored to where you are right now. And if you are looking for a fully guided journey from early pregnancy to birth, the Integrated Birth Path is designed exactly for that.
